A FREE ENTRY WRITING COMPETITION OPEN TO ALL!
Details of the OCTOBER 2016 Creative Writing Competition.

The topic for OCTOBER has been set by the winner of the August 2016 competition Araminta who has suggested that the topic should be written to include any two of the acknowledged ‘seven sins’. These are  Greed, Pride, Envy. Wrath, Gluttony, Lust, and Sloth.

It goes without saying that creativity will be paramount this month because it is most unlikely that any of our members harbour any of the aforementioned sins. (All that is except for one I can think of who indulges all of them, plus a few more that are listed and tattooed on unmentionable parts of his body.)

The length of the story in October has been set at between 500 and 3000 words and competitors are reminded that multiple entries can be accepted (not necessarily using the same two sins for each entry). It would be helpful if the selected sins were annexed to the title. For example, the title might read … ‘I am a Double Sinner’ (Envy and Sloth).

The closing date for entries will be Midnight on Monday the 31st.. of October 2016.
The period for receiving votes will be announced when the competition closes, and votes will not be accepted until after the competition closes.
The “prize” for winning this October competition will be to set the topic for DECEMBER 2016.

Voting.
After the competition closes there will be a vote to decide the first three places.
Just after the closing date, details of how to vote and a vote collection point will be set up here on this competition blog page.

How to enter.
Post your story on your personal WordPress blogs and post a link to your story in the form of a comment below.

And another last (I promise), reminder to those still without their own WordPress site.

WordPress is not the most user friendly of sites but if I can manage it (admittedly not without some frustrations), then I am sure that we all can  … help in setting up your own blog is available, so please ask.

For those unfamiliar with the workings of the monthly competition a list of detailed rules for the competition can be found here …

  1. To busy during October to come up with the time for a story. I’m Chairman of our Village Hall and we’ve been working on a bid for money from the Lottery. The lease is also up for renewal as is the yearly insurance haggle all in one month. A veritable cornucopia of paperwork. One hopes it will harvest a good result. Now how do I turn such mundaneness into a story for November? Good luck everyone for October.

I have to apologise for both the spacing and the layout which currently is beyond my control. Whether this is due to a malfunction in my laptop, or a virus that had crept into my word programme is anybody’s guess but it has driven me to distraction.
The spacing has been changing, the font has been jumping from 10 pt. to 24 pt. and has been a nightmare, and even some of the punctuation has gone awry.
Anyway, here it is. I hope you can make sense of it.

  3. I’ve not been able to devote time to this month’s topic, which seems so attractive and full of opportunity.
However, I wrote this 31 word story this morning. It contains three sins and two familiar characters:
“Wake up you lazy oaf!” shrieked Mr. Quelch, spittling the boys in the front desks.
“Owwwwwww!” squealed the somnolent Bunter as the gimlet-eyed pedagogue’s cane thwacked across the obese one’s shoulders.

    1. Hi Peter the words in Italian are very similar, lussuria, invidia, gola, ira, avarizia, superbia and ozio. Funnily enough I was watching a very light hearted Italian film about the seven deadly sins, a sort of Brian Rix farce and at the end you could vote using your phone to say which sin you considered the worst. I was quite surprised that avarice won.
