unintended consequences. 22

All tcwg site members (and any other interested parties) are invited to read and enjoy the stories entered in the August 2019 creative writing competition.
If, having read all the stories, you would like to register your vote for the winner please follow the voting instructions set out below. This is not obligatory, but if you choose to join in, your participation will be very much appreciated.

The deadline for entries into the August 2019 Creative Writing Competition passed at Midnight on the 31st. of August 2019.

The topic for August 2019 was set by the winner of the June 2019 competition, Araminta, who chose as her subject … ‘ No Good Deed goes Unpunished’
This was loosely paraphrased as …‘Any story that illustrates how a well intention good deed can backfire with unexpected and often dire consequences. ‘

9 stories have been entered and the usual marking procedure will apply i.e. 5 points for first place, 3 points for second place. and 1 point for third place. Please do not submit any point combinations other than 5/3 and 1, and register your votes in the reply box below. As in previous months, when recording a vote it will help if voters quote the name of the story when posting.
Voting can now commence and will continue until 11 p.m. on Monday the 9th of September 2019.

There are no restrictions as to who is allowed to vote, all that is asked is that the voter reads all the stories and votes according to their preference.
Writers are requested not to vote for any of their own entries, and all voters are asked not to comment at length about the stories or record any thoughts that you may have on them, until after voting closes.
There will be no detailed summaries posted as to how the voting is progressing throughout the voting period but as soon as possible after voting closes a tabulated list of results will be posted separately and the winner declared. Voters who may wish to describe in detail the reasons for their choices, or comment at length about some or all of the individual stories, will be given the opportunity to comment on a separate page that will be set up at the end of the voting period and after the result has been posted.
The winning writer will be invited to choose the topic for November 2019, one month later than is usual. This is due to there being an open topic in September for which the usual ‘prize’ of setting the November topic will not apply.

Here are the links to all the stories. (If I have inadvertently missed any entries, or if anyone has difficulty with the links, please advise).

  1. Voting has now closed and here is the result of the August 2019 tcwg competition.
In First Place with 27 points is ‘THE PARABLE OF THE UNWORLDLY SAMARITAN. Written by Atiller.
In Second Place with 17 points is ‘A NEW LEASH ON LIFE. Written by SageFaber.
And in Third Place with 13 points is ‘SEX WITHOUT STRINGS. Written by Capucin.
Congratulations to our top three, and well done to all our other entrants for an interesting and inventive crop of stories. There is no prize for this months winner (which is a consolation of sorts), and as the topic in September is an open subject, Angie will choose the topic for October which it is proposed will be for stories of between 250 and 1500 words.
Thanks to everyone who took part in whatever capacity, and perhaps AmericanMum will kindly confirm the above result with her customary (and much appreciated) detailed tabulation of the votes cast.

  2. This month’s winners:

5 points for A NEW LEASH ON LIFE. Written by SageFaber.
3 points for SEX WITHOUT STRINGS. Written by Capucin.
1 points for THE PARABLE OF THE UNWORLDLY SAMARITAN. Written by Atiller.

Choosing was almost impossible: I really enjoyed the stories, so well done all.

  3. First of all thanks for the points folks, I’m well behind this month. Doing my daughters business books and struggling with the U.S. IRS forms as she is paid in dollars for some work, and I thought our tax system was difficult! But, having now read this months stories perhaps dealing with the IRS is easier than deciding who gets the points, but here goes.

    5 points to Atiller
    3 points to billy foster
    1 point to Sage faber.

    Well done everyone else again!

    1. Thank you kindly Cap’n, but your mention of tax forms threatens to bring on my old twitch again and my former tax advisor, Ken Dodd, is no longer around to help assuage the pain. 🙂
Still, there’s always a drop of the hard stuff to fall back on. Cheers!

  4. Nip and tuck this month with only a cat’s whisker between top and bottom (I thought it only right to put in a word for cats in the light of the doggy stories). 🙂
In a photo finish it was, for me, as follows …

5 Points … A NEW LEASH ON LIFE. Written by SageFaber.
3 points … SEX WITHOUT STRINGS. Written by Capucin.
1 point … FORBIDDEN COLOURS. Written by BillyFoster.

My apologies to all the rest in a month of very tight decisions ‘twixt first and last,
Perhaps the topic should properly have been ‘No good story goes Unrewarded’.
