The deadline for entries into the April 2019 Creative Writing Competition passed at Midnight on the 31st. of April 2019.
The topic for April was set by ExpatAngie (who was generously nominated by Capucin, the winner of the February 2019 competition.
ExpatAngie Angie chose for her subject “Quality over Quantity”, which was interpreted to mean …
” Any story where the merits of quality relative to quantity are explored or exposed, whether (for instance) in respect to goods, relationships, or natural phenomenon.”
A slightly disappointing 8 stories were entered (though we are approaching the Spring Cleaning and Planting season), and all have been accepted for inclusion.
VOTING PROCEDURE.
As in previous months, when recording votes it will help if voters will make sure to quote the name of the story when posting.
Voting can now commence and will continue until 11 p.m. on Wednesday the 8th. of May 2019 when the result will be announced on our Bleda’s Bar and Rest-rooms facebook page. ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/613515532150938/ )
There are no restrictions as to who is allowed to vote, all that is asked is that the voter reads all the stories and votes according to their preference. A brief reason for the choice is welcome but not mandatory.
The voting will be for the first three stories … 5 points for first place, 3 points for second place. and 1 point for third place, and please do not submit any point combinations other than 5. 3. and 1.
Votes should be registered in the reply box below.
Writers are requested not to vote for any of their own entries, and all voters are asked not to comment at length about the stories, or record any thoughts that you may have on them, until after voting closes.
There will be no detailed summaries posted as to how the voting is progressing throughout the voting period but as soon as possible after voting closes a tabulated list of results will be posted separately and the winner declared. Voters who would like to describe in detail the reasons for their choices, or comment at length about some or all of the individual stories, will be given the opportunity to comment on a separate page that will be set up at the end of the voting period and after the result has been posted.
Here are the links to all the stories. (If I have inadvertently missed any entries, or if anyone has difficulty with the links, please advise).

The sum of the April entries encapsulated the chosen topic … high on quality and low on quantity.
Selecting my first and second placings was the easy part, the third place more difficult as there were three very close contenders.
The really difficult part was trying to understand why there seemed to be such a sombre thread running through almost every story … this is in no way a criticism, more an observation.
But here goes …
5 Points … HAVE NOTHING IN YOUR HOUSE. Written by Seadams.
3 Points … A TALE OF TWO LIFESTYLES. Written by Giselle.
1 Point … UP THE JUNCTION. Written by Billy Foster.
And HM’s for the ‘photo finish’ would be one pointers … Who needs friends (when) It is what it is. 🙂

Not easy at all but after a great deal of re-reading and faffing around here are the winners this month:

3 points – UP THE JUNCTION. Written by Billy Foster.
1 point – THE CHIP SHOP MAN. Written by Capucin.
Frankly they all deserved points so well done all.

A tricky topic, this one. Perhaps the theme invites sombreness, for after all, choosing quality over quantity requires something to be given up, often permanently? In any case we produced a wide variety of themes and I very much enjoyed reading all the entries.
My votes for this month:
5 points: FLINTY’S MASTER PLAN. Written by Atiller.
3 points: HAVE NOTHING IN YOUR HOUSE. Written by Seadams.
1 point: THE CHIP SHOP MAN. Written by Capucin.
